The Nineteenth-Century Reading Group will convene Tues, Jan 29th from 4-5 P.M. in Umrath 201, in the Center for the Humanities. In pursuing this year's theme of "Global Victorianisms," we will take up Henry James's novel The Portrait of a Lady as the primary text for the spring semester. The first meeting on January 29th will be dedicated to an in-depth discussion of the novel itself. As we have done this semester, we will continue to discuss The Portrait of a Lady over the course of our meetings (2/12, 3/5, 4/2, and 4/30, 4-5 PM) addressing it each month with new critical approaches. We envision discussingThe Portrait of a Lady through lenses that might include transatlantic relationships, representations of Americans in Europe, Victorian travel, the movement of ideas, queer theory, and more (we are happy to receive suggestions and requests!). All faculty, grads, and staff are welcome, and refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there! Please email c19readinggroup@gmail.com with any questions.
